These genetic variations contribute to the development of a disease, but do not directly cause it. Which means that, for the same disease, a group of people with a high genetic predisposition will develop the disease, while another group will not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DNA_chr.png\" alt=\"genetic predisposition\" class=\"wp-image-3467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DNA_chr.png 700w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DNA_chr-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/DNA_chr-18x8.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GWAS studies focus on identifying genetic changes associated with a greater genetic predisposition for a specific disease. Although each associated genetic variant has a small effect, having variations in numerous genes can significantly increase the risk of disease. The combination of these effects generates a metric known as the polygenic score or &quot;<strong>polygenic score<\/strong>\u201dWhich is expected to serve as a guide in the future to make decisions in the field of health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This image explains very well the focus of the GWAS studies, the analysis of very frequent variants, with little impact (bottom right). There is a <strong>inverse relationship between the impact of a genetic variant (effect size) and the frequency <\/strong>with which we find it in the population (Alelle Freq.), something very logical from an evolutionary perspective (mutations with a great impact, which fortunately are rare)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"847\" height=\"637\" src=\"http:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Variants-1.png\" alt=\"GWAS studies\" class=\"wp-image-3466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Variants-1.png 847w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Variants-1-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Variants-1-768x578.png 768w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Variants-1-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 847px) 100vw, 847px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Keynotes by Manolis Kellis, MIT Professor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a person's genetic component cannot be altered, changes in his or her environment and lifestyle (<a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/genetic-nutritional-test-report\/\">nutrition<\/a>) are capable of decreasing or increasing the risk of developing a disease, usually with a greater impact than our genes alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The polygenic value can only explain the relative risk of the disease. <\/strong>Why relative? The data used to generate this score comes from large-scale genomic studies. These studies detect variants in the genome by comparing groups with a disease (cases) and healthy groups (control).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why the polygenic value compares the risk of a person with the risk of other people, all of them with a different genetic makeup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>What can change my risk?<\/strong> There are <strong>three main factors<\/strong> to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>The advancement of science: <\/strong><\/strong>The best example is the discovery of new variants. What does this mean? Publication of new studies on a disease or on any other trait. The addition of new variants will change your result, increasing their confidence levels. Another thing that can affect your results is the modification of the weight of each of the variants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Study size:<\/strong> <\/strong>The number of people included in the study is relevant to increase the confidence levels of the results.
