It is characterized by the <strong>abnormal fat accumulation<\/strong> on legs, thighs, hips and, in some cases, also on the arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is most striking is that this accumulation is <strong>disproportionate to the rest of the body<\/strong>The trunk may maintain a normal or even low weight, but the extremities visibly increase in volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the exact causes are not yet known, it is believed that a combination of the following factors are involved <strong>genetic, hormonal and inflammatory factors<\/strong> that favor its appearance. In fact, it usually manifests itself in stages of great hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its frequency, lipedema continues to be a disease <strong>underdiagnosed and misunderstood<\/strong>often confused with obesity, lymphedema or cellulite. In some cases, it is necessary to resort to imaging tests such as the <strong>magnetic resonance imaging<\/strong> you will access to: <strong>ultrasound<\/strong>The results of these tests help to rule out other similar pathologies and to confirm the presence of pathological adipose tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Degrees of lipedema<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease is usually classified into three grades, according to the appearance and consistency of the skin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grade I:<\/strong> The skin is smooth and even, although small nodules of fat are visible underneath.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grade II:<\/strong> The skin becomes irregular and harder to the touch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grade III:<\/strong> The skin surface is adipose, especially on the hips and ankles, with abundant nodules of different sizes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most frequent symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs and symptoms of lipedema can vary from person to person, but the most common include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Disproportionate fat gain<\/strong> in legs (and sometimes arms), resistant to diet and exercise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sensitivity to touch and pain<\/strong>even with slight friction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feeling of heaviness and tiredness<\/strong> in the lower extremities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spontaneous bruising<\/strong> without apparent cause.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swelling and fluid retention<\/strong>The symptoms worsen throughout the day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin changes<\/strong>which may present cellulitis, lumps or bumps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limitation of mobility<\/strong>especially when fat accumulation surrounds the joints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there is still no definitive explanation, several factors seem to influence the development of lipedema:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Genetics:<\/strong> having a family history and certain genetic variants increases the risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hormonal changes:<\/strong> estrogens appear to play a key role.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chronic inflammation:<\/strong> could affect the distribution and function of fat tissue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vascular factors:<\/strong> has been observed in relation to alterations in the blood vessels and the lymphatic system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifestyle:<\/strong> sedentary lifestyle and weight gain can aggravate the disease, although they are not its direct cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lipedema is a chronic, progressive fatty tissue disease that affects approximately 1 in 10 women worldwide.
