However, this neurotransmitter is much more than an <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/genetic-personality\/the-happiness-hormones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">happiness hormone<\/a>. <strong>Its influence extends from decision making to regulation of the immune system.<\/strong>. Understanding this hormone in all its complexity allows us to appreciate its fundamental role in our physical and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is dopamine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a brain chemical called <strong>neurotransmitter<\/strong>whose main function is to transport signals between neurons. It is essential for the functioning of the central nervous system and is found in different regions of the brain, with particular concentration in the <strong>prefrontal cortex<\/strong> (decisions and attention) and the <strong>hippocampus<\/strong> (memory and learning).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What roles does dopamine play in our organism?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dopamine is famous for its implication in the <strong>instant gratification<\/strong>. Activities such as \"likes\" on social networks, eating sweets or playing video games release dopamine quickly, creating a feeling of reward that reinforces the behavior. A dopaminergic deficit can translate into <strong>difficulty in studying<\/strong> or perform tasks that require attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regulation of sleep and wakefulness:<\/strong> During the day, dopamine inhibits the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone), helping our body to keep us awake. This is why if there is a dopaminergic deficit, we may experience a constant feeling of tiredness. On the other hand, if we have an excess of dopamine during the night, we may experience insomnia and unrefreshing sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immune system:<\/strong> One of the most fascinating findings is the <strong>communication between the nervous system and the immune system<\/strong>The neurotransmitter-mediated response to dopamine is also known as neurotransmitter-mediated dopamine. Immune cells such as T lymphocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells possess dopamine receptors, allowing them to respond to its levels. This means that<strong> dopaminergic deficits<\/strong> may favor <strong>uncontrolled inflammatory processes and diseases<\/strong> as the <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/parkinson-genetics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkinson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/lupus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">systemic lupus erythematosus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/arthritis-rheumatoid-arthritis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/multiple-sclerosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple sclerosis<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related diseases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/autoimmune-diseases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autoimmune diseases<\/a> mentioned above, alterations in dopamine levels can trigger the development of <strong>neurological diseases<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Excess of dopamine:<\/strong> Associated with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/schizophrenia-hereditary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">schizophrenia<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>bipolar disorder<\/strong>. In schizophrenia, increased dopaminergic receptors are linked to symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions. Therefore, many antipsychotics act by blocking these receptors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Dopamine deficiency<\/b>: It is characteristic of the <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/parkinson-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkinson's disease<\/a><\/b> where dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra die, affecting motor control. The best known treatment is <b>levodopa<\/b> a precursor of dopamine that improves patients' mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stress affects the production of this neurotransmitter.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the <strong>acute stress<\/strong> may momentarily increase dopamine, the <strong>chronic stress<\/strong> has the opposite effect: it depletes its levels. This happens because cortisol, the stress hormone, interferes with dopamine production and function. This combination (low dopamine + high inflammation) leaves us more vulnerable to disorders such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/anxiety-disorders\">anxiety<\/a>depression, chronic fatigue and lack of motivation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to maintain healthy dopamine levels?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maintaining adequate dopamine levels is key to good mental, immune and cognitive health. Some strategies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regular physical exercise: <\/strong>aerobic activity (walking, swimming, cycling) for 30-45 minutes, 4-5 times per week and strength training 2-3 times per week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quality sleep: <\/strong>is important<strong> <\/strong>ensure a good REM phase to balance neurotransmitters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Good nutrition<\/b>: to promote dopamine levels, it is advisable to consume foods rich in <b>tyrosinethe<\/b>, amino acid precursor of dopamine.
