These clots, when they form in places where they should not, can cause serious problems such as a deep vein thrombosis in the legs or a pulmonary embolism if the clot travels to the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">One of the most common causes of hereditary thrombophilia is the <b>factor V Leiden<\/b> a genetic variant of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/2153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gene<em> F5<\/em><\/a> which produces a key protein in the coagulation process: the factor V.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is factor V Leiden associated with an increased risk of thrombus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Under normal conditions, the <b>factor V<\/b> is involved in clot formation when a blood vessel is injured. Once the clot has fulfilled its function, another protein in the body, called the <b>activated protein C<\/b> acts as a brake to stop coagulation by deactivating factor V.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">But in people with <b>factor V Leiden<\/b>, this protein has a mutation that causes it to be <b>resistant to the action of activated Protein C<\/b>. This mutation is hereditary: it is transmitted from parents to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each person has two copies of this gene, one from each parent. You can inherit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A mutated copy<\/strong> and a normal (heterozygous form), which represents a moderate risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two mutated copies<\/strong> (homozygous form), which implies a significantly higher risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Taking a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/adntro.com\" target=\"_self\">genetic test<\/a><\/strong> like the one offered by <b>ADNTRO<\/b> can help you determine whether you carry this mutation and in what form.
