In this disorder, the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, affecting its ability to produce essential hormones for metabolism. Below, we explore in detail what it is, its symptoms, prevalence, and its relationship with genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: What Is It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hashimotos-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351855\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hashimoto's disease<\/a><\/strong>, is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. Some of the <b>most common symptoms<\/b> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><b>Fatigue<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Weight gain<\/b> without changes in diet or exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><b>Cold intolerance<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><b>Dry skin and brittle hair<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><b>Constipation<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><b>Depression or mood changes<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Neck swelling<\/b> (goiter) due to thyroid enlargement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty to <b>concentrate<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since these symptoms can be nonspecific and appear gradually, many people may take a long time to receive an accurate diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevalence of Hashimoto's Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Hashimoto's thyroiditis is one of the most common autoimmune diseases. It is estimated to affect around <strong>2% of the global population<\/strong>, being more prevalent in women than in men, with an approximate ratio of <strong>10:1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, the disease is diagnosed in middle-aged adults, although it can appear at any stage of life, including adolescents and the elderly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genetics and Other Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Hashimoto's thyroiditis has a strong <strong>genetic<\/strong> component, with an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/noticias-corporativas\/heredabilidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heritability<\/a> of 70%. All\u00ed estudi\u00f3 las redes de interacci\u00f3n metab\u00f3lica en el microbioma de pacientes con Enfermedad de Chron y Colitis Ulcerosa en el centro de investigaci\u00f3n CBGP, centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa (2020).
