This process occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondria in eukaryotic cells and depends on the <strong>presence of oxygen<\/strong> to function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This set of metabolic reactions takes advantage of the energy stored in the electrons transported by NADH and FADH\u2082 molecules. These molecules are products of catabolic processes such as glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/learn-genetics\/beta-oxidation\/\">beta-oxidation of fatty acids<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elements of the Electron Transport Chain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In the electron transport chain, the <strong>electrochemical gradient<\/strong>, also known as the proton-motive force, is essential. This <strong>gradient<\/strong> is generated as <strong>protons<\/strong> (H\u207a) are pumped from the mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space using the energy released by the electron transport of NADH and FADH\u2082 molecules.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-1024x570.png\" alt=\"Electron transport chain\" class=\"wp-image-16510\" style=\"width:571px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-1024x570.png 1024w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-1536x855.png 1536w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-2048x1140.png 2048w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/cadena-transporte-electrones-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>All this is possible thanks to the elements of this chain known as complexes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Complex I:<\/strong> This complex accepts electrons from NADH, transferring them to ubiquinone (coenzyme Q) and pumping protons into the intermembrane space, contributing to the electrochemical gradient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complex II:<\/strong> This complex does not contribute directly to electron pumping. Its function is to receive electrons from FADH\u2082 and transfer them to ubiquinone, a protein that accepts electrons from complex I or complex II.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complex III:<\/strong> It transfers electrons from reduced ubiquinone to complex IV, while pumping protons into the intermembrane space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complex IV:<\/strong> It receives electrons from complex III and transfers them to oxygen, which acts as a final electron acceptor. This process generates water molecules as a by-product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>ATP synthase:<\/strong> It utilizes the energy stored in the proton gradient to synthesize ATP (high-energy molecules) from ADP and inorganic phosphate in a process known as <strong>chemiosmosis<\/strong>. ATP synthase acts as an ion channel that \"returns\" the protons to the mitochondrial matrix.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Production of the Electron Transport Chain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each molecule of<strong> NADH<\/strong> transferring electrons to the transport chain generates approx. <strong>2.5 molecules of ATP<\/strong>. On the other hand, the electrons coming from the <strong>FADH\u2082<\/strong> produce close to <strong>1.5 molecules of ATP<\/strong>.
