People with a first-degree relative (parent, sibling) with schizophrenia have a significantly higher risk of developing the disease compared to the general population. This <strong>risk increases<\/strong> even more if there are multiple affected relatives and if we stimulate our environment with risk factors such as <strong>drug consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15209\" style=\"width:598px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia-1.jpg 642w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia-1-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is schizophrenia and what are its symptoms?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Schizophrenia is a <strong>chronic and severe mental disorder<\/strong> that <strong>affects 1% of the population<\/strong>, altering the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It is characterized by a combination of <strong>hallucinations, delusions, and thought and behavior disorders<\/strong> that impair a person's ability to function effectively. Sometimes, patients exhibit a lack of motivation, reduced emotional expression, social withdrawal, and difficulty experiencing pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How hereditary is schizophrenia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">The exact <strong>cause<\/strong> of schizophrenia is unknown, but it is believed to result from a <strong>combination of genetic factors<\/strong> (its <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/corporate-news\/what-is-heritability-inside\/\" target=\"_self\">heritability<\/a> is around 70%), <strong>biological and environmental factors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">There are various genetic variants that modulate the <strong>risk of developing schizophrenia<\/strong>, providing greater or lesser genetic predisposition to the development of the disease. Among these variants, we find variants located in <strong>genes<\/strong> such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong><em>CACNA1C and <\/em>CACNB2<\/strong>: These genes provide instructions for making <strong>calcium channels<\/strong>. Calcium ions are important for many cellular functions, such as cell communication, muscle contraction, and the regulation of certain genes, particularly those involved in <strong>brain development<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong><em>GRIA1<\/em>:<\/strong> expresses glutamate receptors. <strong>Glutamate<\/strong> is the most common excitatory neurotransmitter and is involved in a wide variety of <strong>brain functions<\/strong> such as memory, learning, and brain plasticity in the cerebral cortex. Variants in the <em>GRIA1<\/em> gene may predispose to <strong>alterations in glutamatergic signaling<\/strong>, which regulates neurological excitation in the human nervous system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong><em>TCF4<\/em>:<\/strong> This gene is widely expressed and plays an important role in the development of the <strong>nervous system<\/strong>. Variants in the <em>TCF4<\/em> gene have been associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-1024x585.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15207\" style=\"width:481px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-1024x585.webp 1024w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-300x171.webp 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-768x439.webp 768w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-1536x878.webp 1536w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad-18x10.webp 18w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/esquizofrenia_actividad.webp 1792w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">These variants can be analyzed through <a href=\"http:\/\/adntro.com\/en\" target=\"_self\">genetic tests<\/a> such as those from ADNTRO, which allows you to know your genetic predisposition to developing schizophrenia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do drugs affect the development of schizophrenia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of certain drugs (environmental factors) can increase the risk of developing schizophrenia or trigger psychotic episodes in genetically predisposed individuals. The most common drugs are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Cannabis<\/strong>: Cannabis use, <strong>especially during adolescence<\/strong> (a critical period of brain development), has been associated with an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, can alter brain function and trigger psychotic symptoms in genetically predisposed individuals. This drug <strong>affects the glutamatergic system<\/strong> among others, potentially increasing the risk of psychosis in individuals with variants in the <em>GRIA1<\/em> gene among other genes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Amphetamines<\/strong>: These substances can induce psychotic symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions. Prolonged and abusive use can cause <strong>lasting changes in brain chemistry<\/strong> and increase the risk of psychosis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong>Cocaine<\/strong>: Cocaine can cause psychosis and symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia, especially in high doses or with chronic use. It <strong>affects dopamine,<\/strong> a neurotransmitter that, according to the  dopaminergic hypothesis, is <strong>implicated in schizophrenia<\/strong>. The dopaminergic system can become hyperactive, which is associated with positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions. <em>In vitro<\/em> studies have observed a lower amount of CACNA1C protein after cocaine exposure, reducing calcium channels that are crucial for neurons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">The aforementioned drugs <strong>can cause neuroinflammation<\/strong> by activating microglia. Microglia are neuronal support cells that act as part of the brain's immune system. Neuroinflammation, an inflammatory response in the brain, is <strong>linked to<\/strong> various neuropsychiatric disorders, including <strong>schizophrenia<\/strong>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientific studies have shown that genetics plays an important role in the susceptibility to develop schizophrenia.
