It is a degenerative disease that<b> affects<\/b> approximately <b>1-3% of the population over 60 years of age<\/b> and is influenced by different factors such as genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of Parkinson's disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Parkinson's disease occurs when nerve cells in the basal ganglia, <b>cells responsible for producing dopamine<\/b>, deteriorate or die. Dopamine is involved in many functions including movement control.  That is why patients with this disease present involuntary or uncontrollable movements among which the characteristic tremors of Parkinson's disease stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Without sufficient dopamine, the direct circuit (responsible for the initiation and execution of voluntary movements) is not adequately activated, and the indirect circuit (responsible for suppressing involuntary or unnecessary movements) is not adequately inhibited, resulting in <b>difficulties in initiating and controlling movements<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">This is a <b>progressive symptomatology<\/b> based on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stiffness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tremors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slowness in the initiation and execution of movements (bradykinesia).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in maintaining balance and posture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinson-temblor.jpg\" alt=\"Parkinson&#039;s disease and genetics\" class=\"wp-image-14886\" style=\"width:562px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinson-temblor.jpg 800w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinson-temblor-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinson-temblor-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinson-temblor-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the types of Parkinson's disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three very different types of Parkinson's disease in terms of the age of the patients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Late Onset Parkinson's<\/b>: it is the most common. It occurs in <b>90% of Parkinson's cases<\/b> and symptoms appear in <b>people over 60<\/b>.  Only <b>10% of these cases are hereditary<\/b>, the rest are due to genetic predispositions and exposure to environmental factors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Early Onset Parkinson's<\/b>: occurs in only <b>5-10% of Parkinson's cases<\/b> and is that which develops at l<b>ess than 50 years of age<\/b>. This form of Parkinson's is <b>hereditary<\/b>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Atypical juvenile Parkinson's<\/b>: occurs during the <b>20s<\/b> and is <b>extremely rare<\/b>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orpha.net\/en\/disease\/detail\/391411\" target=\"_self\">orphanet<\/a>, there are only 6 families worldwide with this type of Parkinson's disease.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do genetics affect Parkinson's?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Although there are monogenic forms (a single gene is responsible for the manifestation of the disease), most cases are the result of the <b>complex interaction between phenotypic factors<\/b> such as age or gender (more frequent in males), <b>environmental factors<\/b> such as exposure to certain toxins (pesticides) and <b>genetic factors<\/b>. In addition, an association has been seen between the presence of the \u03b54 allele of APOE (risk factor for <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/alzheimer\/\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer's disease<\/a>) and the susceptibility to develop Parkinson's disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Regarding the specific genes involved, numerous genes (either <b>causal or susceptibility genes<\/b>) are known. Among them we can find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Late Onset Parkinson's disease<\/b>: variations in <em>LRRK2, PARK, VPS35<\/em> and <em>GBA<\/em> genes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Early Onset Parkinson's<\/b>: this type of Parkinson's has been associated with the genes <em>LRRK2, PARK1, PARK2, PARK5, PARK6, PARK7, PARK8, VPS13C<\/em> and <em>PODXL<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Atypical juvenile Parkinson's<\/em>: in the few patients diagnosed with this type of Parkinson's, variations in the genes <em>ATP13A2, PLA2G6, FBXO7, DNAJC6, SPG11, SPG15<\/em> and <em>SYNJ1<\/em> have been seen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinsons-dopamine-1.jpg\" alt=\"Parkinson&#039;s disease and dopamine\" class=\"wp-image-14887\" style=\"width:624px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinsons-dopamine-1.jpg 380w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinsons-dopamine-1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/parkinsons-dopamine-1-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><b>Changes<\/b> in the expression or presence of mutations in the <b><em>PARK1<\/em> gene<\/b> (also known as <em>SNCA<\/em>) are thought to have <b>neurotoxic effects<\/b> on dopaminergic neurons.
