One of the most important questions for many is whether going bald depends on genes. Depending on the \"cause\" we will talk about one type of baldness or another. The most common types of baldness are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/alopecia_areata\/\" target=\"_self\">Alopecia Areata<\/a>:<\/strong>: This is a form of autoimmune baldness in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in sudden and patchy hair loss. It can affect people of all ages and genders. There are two extreme cases of alopecia areata in which all the hair on the scalp is lost (alopecia totalis) or in which the entire body loses hair (alopecia universalis). These forms of baldness are less common and more difficult to treat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Cicatricial Alopecia:<\/b> In this form of baldness, hair loss is caused by permanent destruction of hair follicles due to inflammation or scarring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Telogen Effluvium:<\/b> This is a form of temporary hair loss that usually occurs after a stressful event, surgery, illness or poor diet. Hair in the growth phase prematurely goes into the resting phase and then falls out, but usually recovers over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Alopecia Secondary to Diseases or Medical Treatments:<\/b> Some diseases, such as cancer, and certain medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, can cause temporary hair loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Alopecia Androg\u00e9nica:<\/b> Tambi\u00e9n conocida como calvicie com\u00fan, es la forma m\u00e1s com\u00fan de calvicie. Afecta tanto a hombres como a mujeres (calvicie femenina) y suele ser hereditaria, aunque es m\u00e1s frecuente en hombres. This genetic origin is mainly and originally attributed to maternal genetics. However, it has been shown that the complexity is much greater. Although genetics is one of the most important risk factors (<a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/corporate-news\/what-is-heritability-inside\/\" target=\"_self\">heritability<\/a> 80%), environmental factors such as stress, lifestyle and hormones also play a role. There is a <b>hormonal component that acts on the hair follicles genetically predisposed to baldness<\/b>, progressively causing their <b>atrophy<\/b> until the hair disappears completely (it causes changes in the life cycle of the hair).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">The <b>hormone dihydrotestosterone<\/b> (DHT) plays a crucial role in common male pattern baldness. DHT-sensitive hair follicles become smaller over time, resulting in hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to visible hair loss, existing hair often becomes thinner and weaker in the affected areas. This can give the impression that the hair is becoming thinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">The most distinctive feature of common <b>male pattern baldness<\/b> is the gradual progression with age and the pattern of hair loss. It usually begins with a recession of the hairline on the forehead, creating the shape of an \"M\" (<b>pattern 2<\/b>). Over time, the hair loss may spread to the top of the head, forming a \"crown\" (<b>pattern 3<\/b>). In advanced stages, these two patterns of hair loss may merge, leaving a fringe of hair on the sides and back of the head, often referred to as a \"hair island\" (<b>pattern 4<\/b>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"147\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/patron_calvicie_masculina.png\" alt=\"Common male baldness patterns\" class=\"wp-image-12448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/patron_calvicie_masculina.png 567w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/patron_calvicie_masculina-300x78.png 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/patron_calvicie_masculina-18x5.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Genetic risk of developing baldness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">At <b>ADNTRO<\/b> we use what is known as <b>polygenic risk<\/b> to know your probability of suffering male pattern baldness. Genetic variants in <em>RSPO2<\/em> may contribute to hair loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/?term=LGR4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LGR4<\/a><\/strong><\/em>: This receptor is part of the Wnt signaling pathway, which as mentioned with <em>WNT10A<\/em>, is crucial for hair follicle development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/?term=TWIST1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TWIST1<\/a>:<\/strong><\/em>  <em>TWIST1<\/em> is a gene that regulates hair development, and has been studied in the context of hair loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/\">ADNTRO<\/a> and <strong>know your genetic predisposition <\/strong>against common male pattern baldness and many other features as well as alopecia areata thanks to our <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/\">DNA TEST<\/a>. All\u00ed estudi\u00f3 las redes de interacci\u00f3n metab\u00f3lica en el microbioma de pacientes con Enfermedad de Chron y Colitis Ulcerosa en el centro de investigaci\u00f3n CBGP, centro de Excelencia Severo Ochoa (2020).
