{"id":12364,"date":"2024-04-05T17:24:56","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T15:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adntro.com\/?p=12364"},"modified":"2025-07-28T08:20:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T06:20:08","slug":"hereditario-alzheimer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/salud\/hereditary-alzheimer\/","title":{"rendered":"How hereditary is Alzheimer's disease?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\" translation-block\">Alzheimer's is a <b>complex disease<\/b> and its onset and progression are influenced by a combination of <b>genetic<\/b> (how hereditary Alzheimer's is) and <b>environmental<\/b> (lifestyle) <b>factors<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alzheimer_genetica_2.png\" alt=\"How hereditary is Alzheimer&#039;s disease?\" class=\"wp-image-12366\" style=\"width:513px;height:290px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alzheimer_genetica_2.png 567w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alzheimer_genetica_2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alzheimer_genetica_2-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In terms of genetic architecture, we can classify Alzheimer's disease into <b>two main groups<\/b>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hereditary early-onset Alzheimer's disease:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\">It is a <b>rare<\/b> form of the disease that usually affects people <b>under 65 years<\/b> of age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">It accounts for less than <b>5% of all cases<\/b> of Alzheimer's disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">It has been related to mutations in three specific genes: <b><em>PSEN1, PSEN2 and APP<\/em><\/b>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/en\/blog\/corporate-news\/what-is-heritability-inside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>heritability<\/strong><\/a> of this type of Alzheimer's disease is around <b>90%<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Late-onset Alzheimer's disease:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\">It is <b>the most common<\/b> form of the disease (about 95% of cases) and usually affects people <b>over 65 years<\/b> of age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Although the exact cause is not clear, several genetic variants associated with the disease have been identified (<b>heritability around 70%<\/b>). Among these variants, it can be found the \u03b54 combination of the <b><em>APOE<\/em> gene<\/b>. People who inherit one copy of the \u03b54 form from one of their parents have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's, and those who inherit two copies (one from each parent) are even more at risk. However, having one or even two \u03b54 copies of the APOE gene does not guarantee that someone will develop Alzheimer's disease. Many people with genetic risk factors never develop Alzheimer's, while others without these factors do.
