More than 3.5 million people worldwide suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">It is an <b>autoimmune disease<\/b>, a type of disorder in which the immune system becomes overactive and mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy tissues and organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of Crohn's disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">This pathology, along with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, is characterized by <b>periods of activity<\/b> during which symptoms become more acute and the clinical course worsens (commonly known as \"flares\") <b>and phases of remission<\/b> during which patients show clinical improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The duration of each phase is unpredictable, and may vary both within and between patients. The most frequent symptoms manifested during \"flares\" are intestinal and those deriving from them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fissures and ulcers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tiredness and fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of appetite and weight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General malaise and weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rectal bleeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Crohn's disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\"><b>Depending on which part of the digestive tract is affected<\/b>, we will speak of one type of Crohn's disease or another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b>Ileocolitis<\/b>: according to the Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Foundation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CCFA<\/a>), it is the most common type. It have been seen alterations in the microbiome of people with Crohn's disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">And, what is the microbiome? The human gut contains a large number of microbes that normally remain stable over time; however, alterations in the microbiome sometimes occur. Several studies have correlated <b>alterations in the microbiome<\/b> (dysbiosis), with destabilization of the microbiome and also with various diseases such as CD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">However, <b>most experts argue<\/b> that the origin lies in <b>some environmental factor<\/b> (diet, stress, exposure to certain microorganisms, immune system status...) <b>that triggers the inflammatory response in genetically susceptible individuals<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Genetics and Crohn's disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Crohn's disease has a genetic basis. <b>Several genes have been are associated with an increased risk of developing the disease<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/dna-intestino-color.png\" alt=\"Crohn&#039;s disease and genetics\" class=\"wp-image-11245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/dna-intestino-color.png 276w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/dna-intestino-color-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/adntro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/dna-intestino-color-12x12.png 12w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the major genes related to Crohn's disease are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><b><em>NOD2\/CARD5<\/b><\/em>: This is the most studied gene associated with Crohn's disease. Mutations in this gene significantly increase the risk of developing the disease, <b>especially in people of European descent<\/b>. It is estimated that about 15% to 30% of patients with Crohn's disease have mutations in this gene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/55054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0<strong><em>ATG16L1<\/em><\/strong><\/a>: Genetic variants in the <em>ATG16L1<\/em> gene have also been associated with an increased risk of Crohn's disease. This gene is involved in the process of autophagy, which is important for the <b>removal of bacteria and other damaged cellular materials<\/b>. Defective variants of this gene can affect the normal function of the immune system and the response to intestinal bacteria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/3588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0<strong><em>IL10RB<\/em><\/strong><\/a>: This gene encodes the interleukin-10 (IL-10) beta receptor protein. IL-10 is a cytokine with potent <b>anti-inflammatory properties that plays a central role in regulating inflammation and immune response<\/b> by limiting the host immune response to pathogens. This prevents damage to the host and maintains normal tissue homeostasis.
